India had a highly developed Gurukul system of learning from the Vedic times. In Gurukul, the student (Shishya) learns in the ‘Kula’, ashram or home of the ‘Guru’, the teacher. After ‘Upanayana’, the initiation, a student typically between the age of 8 to 12, was sent to ‘Gurukul’ for learning from an enlightened Master – the Guru. In a Gurukul, irrespective of their social status, the students stayed together for learning from the masters. Some of the most enlightened learnings of Upanishads took place in these Gurukuls.

However, with the coming of British rule and imposition of British education system, the Gurukul system of learning declined and was replaced by modern education system of schools, colleges and universities. Yet, the Gurukul system is still vibrant and active in certain disciplines of learning even today - music, dance, Ayurveda to name a few. In modern universities the Gurukul system of learning is prevalent even today for pursuing research, although the students do not stay with the teachers.

Multiversity has taken the mission of resurrecting India’s ancient Gurukul system of learning with its contemporary interpretation. In the first stage, Multiversity is networking with 108 Gurukuls, located mostly in Pune and other parts of Maharashtra. These Gurukuls with their highly acclaimed Masters are imparting education to their students through the Gurukul System. Multiversity’s Gurukuls span several disciplines of learning such as vedic studies, philosophy, saint literature, Yoga, Ayurveda, vocal and instrumental music, dance forms such as Bharat Natyam and Kathak, sculpture, painting, traditional arts and crafts, agriculture and rural development as well as science, engineering and innovation. These Gurukuls will get linked to Multiversity through its Schools of Learning.

In the contemporary world with large cities and space crunch, Multiversity is enabling the identified Gurukuls with the power of ICT through eLearning and interactive TV-centric learning innovated by Divinet - a sister research organisation of Multiversity. Multiversity hopes to resurrect India’s acclaimed Gurukul System of learning through its contemporary interpretation powered by advances in ICT.
